Finding a Network Jack

The Computer Science Department supports wired connections in the Brendan Iribe Center for Computer Science using the BLACK network jacks. This includes all offices for faculty and staff with Computer Science appointments and Graduate Student offices on Floors 1, 2, and 5.

Graduate Student Offices

Plug into a BLACK network jack near your desk where the label ends with an odd-number, e.g. 1A-327 or 1B-327. Jacks are found in floor boxes or along the side walls. Every other floor box has black jacks, you may need to look under the desk next to you to find one.

If you need a longer network cable to reach the closest black network jack, bring your old cable to IRB 2109 to trade.

If your advisor has made arrangements for you to have a department-managed computer, you will receive instructions for which network jack you should be connected to.

Faculty Offices

Contact helpdesk@cs.umd.edu to review your options for department-managed vs. self-supported systems. IT staff will appropriately provision the network jacks in your office.

Obtaining an IP Address

Most network jacks will allow you to connect your laptop and get an address over DHCP. This may take up to 60 seconds.

DHCP Settings

To connect to our network, computers need to be configured to use DHCP. Unless the IT staff have informed you otherwise, use the following instructions to configure your computer:

Windows 11

To ensure that your Windows 11 computer is set to use DHCP:

1. Open Settings`.
2. Go to Network & internet.
3. Go to Advanced network settings.
4. Select Ethernet (your Ethernet adapter may have other names, but it should say Ethernet).
5. Go to View additional properties.
6. Next to “IP assignment”, click Edit.
7. Select Automatic (DHCP) and click Save.
8. Next to “DNS server assignment”, click Edit.
9. Select Automatic (DHCP) and click Save.

Windows 10

To ensure that your Windows 10 computer is set to use DHCP (instructions created using Windows 10 version 22H2, build 19045.3324):

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Network & internet.
3. Click the Properties button under your Ethernet adapter (your Ethernet adapter may have other names, but it should say Ethernet).
4. Under IP Settings, click Edit.
5. Set the dropdown at the top of the popup to Automatic (DHCP) and click Save.

Mac

To ensure that your Mac computer is set to use DHCP:

1. Open System Preferences and select Network.
2. Depending on how you are connecting, select Ethernet in the left pane.
3. In the “Configure IPv4” drop-down box, select Using DHCP.
4. Click Apply in the lower right of the “Network” window.

Static IP Addresses / DHCP Reservations

The department network supports Dynamic DNS, so most users will not need static IP addresses or DHCP reservations. See Accessing office computers remotely.

If you believe you need a static IP address or DHCP reservation, contact helpdesk@cs.umd.edu with the following information:

• the reason you can’t use DDNS,
• the name you’d like to use for your computer,
• the room number and desk number of your desk,
• the number from an existing ethernet cable on your desk if one exists,
• the MAC address of your computer.

Public IP Addresses

University of Maryland policy does not allow provisioning public IP addresses in offices.
The Department offers a colocation hosting space in our A. V. Williams Data Center for the purpose of hosting research systems and public IP addresses are available there.
If you plan to order systems to be placed in the colocation space, we ask that you purchase rack-mountable equipment.
